About Us
Welcome to the Recipes for Relief Initiative. With love, by Santa Clara University Students.
Recipes for Relief is a group of passionate volunteers who cook and provide warm meals for residents of the JW House. The JW House is a low- to no-cost medical hospitality home for families of patients currently receiving care at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Hospital and San Francisco Bay Area hospitals. Through cooking, we are able to bring a brief sense of normalcy and peace to families, because the last thing they should worry about is what or where to eat while staying beside loved ones. Recipes for Relief visits JW House monthly to prepare brunch and dinner meals.
Our Story
Cooking always begins with a story. Nicholas’ passion for cooking originates from his experience growing up with a rare endocrine growth disorder called Russell Silver Syndrome (RSS), which created a strong aversion to food. Hallmarks of this condition include severe lack of appetite, resulting-malnutrition, and failure to thrive if not properly treated. At home, Nicholas was deeply involved in the cooking process as a child, preparing garlic purees, spice blends, and experimented with different recipes that created unique aromas, textures, and tastes that sparked his curiosity in food. This curiosity in food, and ultimate bond with cooking, helped Nicholas overcome a lack of appetite previously thought to be genetically encoded.
